The Congo Free State existed from 1885 to 1908, and was privately controlled by Leopold II, King of Belgians. Leopold was able to maintain control over the region by claiming he was doing humanitarian work in the region.
From 1885 to 1908 the first act of mass genocide and terror in the 20th century were committed by King Leopold. During this time period an estimated 10 million Congolese were exterminated.
